A SNEAK PREVIEW - ENDURING CLASSICS IN THE DECEMBER 11TH ANTIQUES AUCTION

23rd November 2021

A design classic is seen as a standard of its kind with enduring, instantly recognisable aesthetic appeal which retains these qualities far beyond its time. It is these items which never lose their appeal on the market, selling for solid prices, and which tend to remain treasured items for generations.
Robert Thompson’s Craftsmen Ltd is one company synonymous with traditional high-quality materials and skills which has stood the test of time. Works by Robert ‘Mouseman’ Thompson have featured over the years at Killens Mendip Action Rooms, most recently in September where three lots all found new owners. The furniture and smaller wood items are immediately recognisable for the little mouse carved onto all the furniture pieces, a symbol which has been a registered trademark of the firm since 1931. The December Antiques and Collectables Auction on 11th December features two items spanning the company’s history – an early Mouseman table lamp, and a later Mouseman ashtray.
The fashion world has many names and designs marked as classics. Founded by Roger Saul in 1971 in our home county of Somerset, the British brand Mulberry has expanded over the years with the ‘It’ handbags retailing for high prices. A vintage Mulberry handbag in tan crocodile leather is just one of a collection of Mulberry bags and belts to be sold in the December Antiques auction.
One valued heirloom often passed down the generations is the wristwatch or pocket watch. That physical connection with your past is one which will never go out of fashion. Whilst name, manufacturing quality and condition add to the market price of a watch, the sentimental value is often treasured just as much by the owner. Killens Mendip Auction Rooms regularly sells quality watches from all eras and December is no exception - a John Spendlove silver pair case pocket watch and chain is just one from a large collection of pocket watches and other time pieces to be offered for sale.
