Last week’s sales of Victorian and Later Effects on Tuesday and Antiques and Collectables on Saturday proved that the interest in auctions is getting back to pre-Covid levels. The Saturday auction in particular saw many familiar faces as well as some new ones in the room, and, accompanied by a great number of telephone and online bids, realised a great total result.
Stars of the show included the three lots of Robert ‘Mouseman’ Thompson furniture, the collection of watches – including an 18ct gold ladies Cartier wristwatch for £ 2150 - a beautiful oil painting of a girl feeding a donkey with a St. Bernard by Alfred William Strutt (1856-1924) which sold for £ 2700, a set of two framed Battle of Britain medals for £ 1300, and a Chinese charger with writhing dragons engraved and in relief which sold for £ 890.
