Almost 600 lots of silver, fine jewellery, and watches went under the hammer in October at the Mendip Auction Rooms, achieving exceptional prices across the board. As one seasoned buyer remarked, “I have never seen prices like it.”
The appetite for silver remains strong, with a wide range of exquisite pieces drawing competitive bidding. Highlights included a 1930s four-piece tea set that achieved £2,800, a silver cutlery set at £2,600, and an Indian teaset—returning home to India—selling for £1,800. A striking collection of trophies also captured bidders’ attention, notably a 1950s Ladies Trophy from the Mendip Farmers Point-to-Point, which fetched £1,500. The buoyant silver market was further demonstrated by a silver kilo bar selling for £1,400 after spirited bidding.
The jewellery section shone just as brightly, attracting international interest and strong online participation across both bidding platforms. Standout results included a 9ct gold link necklace achieving £2,200, a 19th-century gold pendant and chain reaching £1,950, a platinum and diamond solitaire ring realising £1,700, and an Italian fancy link necklace—returning to its country of origin— £1,200.
An elegant selection of watches also drew enthusiastic buyers. An 18ct gold pocket watch realised £1,300, an 18ct gold ladies’ watch £1,200, and a Breitling Chronometer wristwatch £950.
The next specialist sale of silver, jewellery, and watches will take place in December, and entries are now invited. Items of all values are welcomed, and the expert team at Killens is available to provide free advice and valuations. The auction rooms are open for drop-in valuations between 10am and 3pm on weekdays, or photographs can be emailed.
